Really Real but Really Fake

My daughter and her friend approached a life-sized witch sitting on a porch. Apprehensively, they examined her from a distance to determine if she were the genuine article. Their decision was the following: She’s really real but she’s really fake. That settled everything, and that was that.

If only truth could be determined by proclamation. True or False? Real or Fake? Partially true/real or partially false/fake? Can it be settled by a vote? Can the truth change? I’m the weird kind of person who wants the actual bottom line. For example, when we were in Bethlehem and Jerusalem our guides would say things like,

"This might have been the hill where the shepherds tended their flocks by night when the angels proclaimed Jesus’s birth."

"So it might be or it was?" I’d press.

"This could have been the place where the New Born King lay in a manger."

"Could have been? So you don’t really know for sure?"

"That was likely Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified. And we believe this to be the tomb where He rose again on the third day."

All the signs pointed to that hill being the actual site so I didn’t argue. My heart was pounding out of my chest when I entered the tomb so I didn’t cry out, "speculation!"

I finally accepted that what took place thousands of years ago with civilization built upon civilization, might not be possible to pinpoint an exact location. Semantics didn’t change the truths I believed in, but rather made things more credible than by insisting on absolute accuracy. There is a time to know and a time to believe.

Today I listened to a Christmas carol stating how wonderful it would be to spend Christmas on Christmas Island. But wait a minute. I have a friend who actually lived on Christmas Island and the islanders don’t celebrate Christmas. They don’t even know what it is. Santa doesn’t paddle around in a canoe leaving gifts like the song says. The Andrews Sisters and Guy Lombardo released the song in 1946. Didn't anyone bother to check the facts? That’s 75 years of falseness—a perfect example of really fake.

Is it too much to ask for real on major issues like Covid -19? Do masks prevent the virus? Science says no while Fauci says yes, after saying no, while declaring himself to be Science. How effective are the vaccines? Natural immunity? Does the vaccine cause serious harm to some people? How many people have died of Covid? How many have died with Covid? Why is the country freaking out over the mild Omicron variant when the death toll is only 7 people world wide? Is anyone paying attention to the real costs of Covid? I want accurate information.

I could site a thousand examples of really real but really fake, but all I want is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God. And I want to defend truly true truth. John Calvin said, "A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent."

Merry Christmas to believers in truth, standers for truth, and demanders of truth.
